On June the 11the transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven set us on the path to join 45 other countries that have banned the use of mobiles for texting or calling in cars without a hands free device.
Australia the UK and now even California are Hands Free and after 411 injury accidents and 26 deaths all in part attributable to cell phone usage in cars the Minister is setting out its policy that will most likely result in a Public Education program followed by a full ban by July 09.
Although a Public consultation process will be put in place in August 08 it is likely that the government will find support for the Ban and after a short adjustment period we would see our friendly police enforcement officers issuing tickets of around $50 plus 25 demerit points per infringement and it wont take an act of parliament just a simple change to the road transport safety regulations.
Whichever side of the fence you are sitting it looks like we will all need to invest in Hands free technology sooner rather than later.
There are of course several solutions to the problem.
Some later model fully loaded cars come with built in hands free options however most of us will have either a corded or Bluetooth Headset or a Bluetooth enabled hands free speaker unit.
